Blackburn Rovers

Premier League
December 13, 1997

It may seem perverse to put everyone through a dismal defeat from 1997 but this game was a watershed moment in Arsène Wenger's first full season in charge.

Everything seemed rosy when Marc Overmars lobbed Arsenal into an 18-minute lead at Highbury but the home side fell apart in the second half, conceding goals to Jason Wilcox, Kevin Gallacher and Tim Sherwood.

What followed would shape Arsenal's season. Harsh words were exchanged within the dressing room and, with their differences sorted out, the players stepped up a gear. Arsenal remained unbeaten for the rest of the season and ended the campaign with a League and FA Cup double.

Our FreezeFrame picture shows Overmars giving Arsenal the lead against Blackburn. Five months later, the Dutchman's goal at the same end of the pitch against Everton all but secured the title.

Arsenal: Seaman, Dixon, Winterburn, Adams, Keown, Overmars, Petit, Platt (Boa Morte 76), Parlour (Vieira 65), Wright, Bergkamp. Subs not used: Bould, Manninger, Anelka.
