ARSENAL 1-0 EVERTON
March 31, 1990
Everton 1 Arsenal 6. If you had a flutter on that scoreline at the start of the season you would have been laughing all the way to the bookies. Just don't expect a repeat at Emirates Stadium on Saturday.
Games between Arsenal and Everton are usually tight affairs and the corresponding fixture 20 years ago was no exception.
At the time George Graham's side still had an outside chance of the title and they kept their hopes flickering thanks to Alan Smith's winner. He was the Club's top scorer for the second year in succession but, ultimately, the defending champions could not trump Liverpool as they did in 1989.
Our FreezeFrame image shows centre back Steve Bould - now Arsenal's Under-18 coach - challenging for a cross with Everton keeper Neville Southall. Kevin Campbell is just behind Bould while Smith is lurking with menace to the left of the picture, ahead of Arsenal skipper Tony Adams.
Kwame Ampadu also featured in this game 20 years ago, coming off the bench to make one of his two appearances in an Arsenal shirt.
Arsenal team: Lukic, Dixon, Winterburn, Thomas, Bould, Adams, Hayes, Richardson (O'Leary), Smith, Campbell (Ampadu), Groves.
