Manchester United

Premier League
Old Trafford
March 14, 1998

Sunday’s trip to Old Trafford comes too early in the campaign to determine who will win the Premier League title. But this has certainly been a bellweather fixture down the years, not least in March 1998.

Arsenal’s victory that day still left them six points off leaders Manchester United with two months of the season left to play. The crucial factor was that Arsène Wenger’s side still had three games in hand and, for the first time, could determine their own destiny.

Marc Overmars’ goal in the 79th minute not only broke down United’s defence that day, it broke their hearts for the rest of the campaign. Arsenal ended up winning the title with two games to spare.

Perhaps the iconic picture from that game is Overmars poking the ball through the legs of Peter Schmeichel and our image shows the celebrations that followed.

Arsenal's Dutch winger looks up to see Dennis Bergkamp and Nicolas Anelka haring towards him, having both won a header in the build-up to Overmars' strike.

Arsenal: Manninger; Dixon, Keown, Adams, Winterburn; Parlour (Garde), Petit, Vieira, Overmars, Wreh (Anelka), Bergkamp.
