Arsenal in the Community is celebrating the European Day of Languages (EDL), a Council of Europe initiative, which is held annually on September 26 to celebrate language and cultural diversity.
The day was first celebrated during the European Year of Languages in 2001 with more and more people getting involved every year.
Through the Arsenal Double Club, an award-winning education and football programme, Arsenal in the Community has developed modern foreign language modules. These modules combine football with language learning and include interactive DVDs of Cesc Fabregas and Gael Clichy answering questions in their native languages.
This use of player facts and other Arsenal publications during the sessions help the youngsters put the language learning into context. Following a 45-minute lesson in the class, a football coaching session is delivered using vocabulary in French or Spanish.
This free video shows Arsène Wenger, a multi-linguist himself, giving his opinion on the importance of languages in young people’s education.
