Bathed in glorious Spring sunshine, more than 350 adults and 250 Junior Gunners took part in the event, which was a huge success and has already raised in excess of £40,000 towards the Club’s season-long fundraising target of £500,000.

Both the Junior Gunners and adults were put through their paces before the race with a professional warm-up exercise from fitness expert, Stuart Amory, before Blue Peter presenter Andy Akinwolere sounded the starting horn to get the youngsters on their way. Emma Byrne and Ellen White of the Arsenal Ladies then joined athlete and Olympic medalist, Kelly Sotherton, to start the adult race.

First past the finishing line for the men was 17-year old, Mark Cameron, in a time of 26 minutes 58 seconds. Amy Burr, who was holidaying in the UK from California, took the women’s crown, completing the 6.4km run in 30 minutes and 55 seconds.

Kelly Sotherton commented: “As a massive Arsenal fan, it was a real privilege to come down to Emirates Stadium and officially start this year’s ‘Be a Gunner. Be a Runner.’ There was a brilliant atmosphere and everyone seemed to have a really good time. Hopefully the event will raise lots of money for Centrepoint.”

The ‘Be a Gunner. Be a Runner.’ event is part of Arsenal’s season-long Be a Gooner. Be a Giver campaign. Through this, the Club aims to raise £500,000 to help create a state-of-the-art facility at a refurbished centre in Soho, helping young homeless people to learn essential life skills and stay off the streets permanently.
