Fabregas, Almunia and White... toured the cancer unit

Fabregas – The good example in my life

By Matt Fortune

Anthony Whitehead is an example to Cesc Fabregas, according to the midfielder.

Last week Anthony was a guest speaker at the launch of Arsenal’s Charity of the Season, the Teenage Cancer Trust. Sitting alongside Arsène Wenger and Who front-man Roger Daltrey, the aspiring musician revealed that he was diagnosed with cancer just three days before his 18th birthday. At the same stage of his own development Fabregas was coming to the end of a breakthrough season with the Gunners. Their lives couldn’t be more different.

But speaking after the event Fabregas was bowled over by the courage he had seen on his tour of the cancer unit at the University College Hospital.

“I told Anthony 'you are my age and I don’t know what to say',” said Cesc. “He looks so mature and after all he’s been through, it’s amazing. I told him many congratulations because not everyone has this character. To see someone of my age so mature despite an experience as bad as that, and to get through it and now be happy, smiling and looking forward to his future, it’s unbelievable.

“I think a lot of people our age should take an example from him. It makes you feel fortunate for what you have.

“Sometimes at our age we think we know everything but we don’t know anything. That’s the truth. You have to fight for your dream and you have to fight for everything but you have to feel fortunate for what you have.

“He kept fighting for his dream which was to beat the cancer and he made it and now he has a bright future for sure."
