Cesc Fabregas has no intention of leading Arsenal to a fourth-place finish in 2009/10.
Last season, the Gunners held off the challenge of Aston Villa and Everton to crucially secure the final Champions League spot.
However, Arsène Wenger’s side trailed champions Manchester United by 18 points in the final standings and were nine and 14 points adrift of Chelsea and Liverpool respectively. Unsurprisingly a similar placement in just over nine months’ time would not please the Club captain.
Speaking at a Q&A with supporters on Members’ Day – an exclusive event for the Club’s official members – Fabregas explained exactly why.
“I don’t think it is ever our expectation to finish fourth,” the 22-year-old declared.
“We want to win and we will never start a season thinking we will only fight for fourth place – I don’t think we would be here if we felt like this.
“I have said many times that Arsenal is a big club. We haven’t won a trophy for four years, so what? Every big club goes through dry patches and difficult moments, you could say now is one of them at Arsenal.
“But we have to be stronger than ever, we have to all be positive about it. If we start thinking like fourth is the target we will go nowhere.
“We must be positive, we have quality here and the boss believes in all of us. This year is going to be the one, I am sure of it.”
