FC Barcelona 5-0 Real Betis
Wednesday, January 12
Lionel Messi celebrated being named World Footballer of the Year by scoring a magnificent hat-trick for Barcelona as they thrashed Real Betis 5-0 in the Copa del Rey on Wednesday. The Argentine’s treble was added to by goals from Pedro and Seydou Keita as Pep Guardiola’s side cruised to victory in the first leg of their Quarter-Final. Messi was presented with the FIFA Ballon d’Or before kick off and showed just why he won the award with another remarkable performance. The 23-year-old put Barca ahead a minute before half time when he collected Andreas Iniesta’s pass before lofting the ball over Casto from close range. Messi bundled home a second after 63 minutes before racing clear to complete his treble with a typically clinical finish 11 minutes later. Pedro added a fourth 14 minutes from time and Keita’s late header made it five.
