FC Barcelona 0-0 Athletic Bilbao
Tuesday, December 21
Barcelona ended their year with a 0-0 stalemate against Athletic Bilbao in the Copa Del Rey on Tuesday. Pep Guardiola made a number of changes from the side that won so convincingly at the weekend but did include Xavi, Andreas Iniesta and Javier Mascherano in his starting XI. Iniesta came closest to breaking the deadlock in the first half when his stinging shot was acrobatically tipped over by Bilbao goalkeeper Iraizoz after 24 minutes. Five minutes later the same man went close again from long range but the away side stood firm against the formidable Barca attack. David Villa and Lionel Messi were introduced early in the second half as Guardiola’s side pushed for a breakthrough but neither could make the difference. Gerard Pique should have done better in the final few minutes but he couldn’t get enough on Messi’s cross and the game ended goalless. Barca now enjoy a ten-day break until they play Levante at the Nou Camp on January 1.
