Wojciech Szczesny in action for Poland

Wojciech Szczesny was sent off on his first appearance in a major tournament as Poland opened Euro 2012 with a 1-1 draw against Greece.

Robert Lewandowski gave the co-hosts a dream start in Warsaw when he headed in Jakub Blaszczykowski's cross after 17 minutes and Poland tightened their grip when Greece defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos received a second yellow card.

But the Greeks improved after the break and levelled in the 51st minute when substitute Dimitris Salpingidis prodded in a loose ball after Szczesny failed to claim Vassilis Torossidis's right-wing cross.

The Arsenal goalkeeper had barely had a touch up until that point and, 18 minutes after the equaliser, he was dismissed for bringing down Salpingidis inside the area.

Szczesny was replaced by Przemyslaw Tyton and the substitute became an instant hero when he pushed aside Giorgos Karagounis' low spot kick.

Ironically, Lukasz Fabianski would have been the likely replacement for Szczesny but the Arsenal No 2 has been ruled out of the tournament with an injury.

Now neither Gunners keeper will appear in Poland's second group game - against Russia on Tuesday.
