Andrey Arshavin played his third full match of Euro 2012 - but it was still not enough to help Russia avoid a premature exit from Euro 2012 after a shock 1-0 defeat to Greece.

Captain Giorgos Karagounis fired the Greeks - who had to win in order to at least stand a chance of progression - ahead on the stroke of half time.

Arshavin was busy in attack once more but could not connect with Alan Dzagoev's cross after 10 minutes to trouble goalkeeper Michalis Sifakis.

Russia controlled large parts of the match without threatening the Greek goal however, but they should have drawn level in the dying minutes when Dzagoev nodded an excellent Arshavin cross agonisingly wide.

An equaliser would have been enough to secure progress to the quarter-finals, but the spirited Greeks held out to confirm their place in the next round on head-to-head results.

Elsewhere in Group A, Tomas Rosicky's Czech Republic claimed top spot with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Wojciech Szczesny's Poland, who also exit the competition.
