Robin van Persie
Portugal 2-1 Netherlands, Group B
Sunday, June 17
Robin van Persie is heading home from Euro 2012 after Holland fell to a third successive defeat in Kharkiv on Sunday.
To qualify Holland needed to beat Portugal by two goals and rely on Germany beating Denmark but, while the Germans kept their part of the bargain, the Dutch flattered to deceive yet again.
They started well and led after 11 minutes when Rafael van der Vaart curled a shot into the far corner. But Portugal soon found their rhythm and drew level when Cristiano Ronaldo slotted home after 28 minutes.
Ronaldo emerged as the game's key player and, buoyed by his goal, carved out a number of chances after the break.
Nani missed the best of them from close range but Ronaldo took matters into his own hands and scored the winner 16 minutes from time.
Van Persie squandered Holland's best chance of an equaliser but even that would have been too little, too late for one of the pre-tournament favourites.
