Andrey Arshavin, Tomas Rosicky
Russia 4-1 Czech Republic, Group A
Friday, June 8
Andrey Arshavin delivered an inspirational performance as Russia defeated Tomas Rosicky's Czech Republic 4-1 in their opening Euro 2012 match on Friday night.
Despite a confident start from the Czechs, Dick Advocaat's side opened the scoring when the impressive Alan Dzagoev fired home after Aleksandr Kerzhakov had headed against the far post in the 15th minute.
With Arshavin in top form, the Russians came close to doubling their advantage soon afterwards when the Arsenal forward laid on a pass for the advancing Dzagoev, who fired wide.
But there was no holding back Advocaat's side, as Arshavin turned creator to set up Roman Shirokov, who added to the Russians' advantage.
But just when it looked like the result was assured, Vaclav Pilar halved the Czech Republic's deficit with a neat finish in the 52nd minute.
But an excellent Russia side would not be denied and two goals in three minutes late on - from Dzagoev and Roman Pavlyuchenko - settled matters to give Arshavin and co the perfect start to their campaign in Poland and Ukraine.
