Andrey Arshavin claimed a superb assist for Russia but Dick Advocaat's side had to settle for a point as Poland fought back to claim a 1-1 draw in Warsaw on Tuesday night.

Arshavin - and Russia - started the match relatively slowly and the co-hosts came close to opening the scoring early on but Sebastian Boenisch saw his header saved by the feet of Vyacheslav Malafeev.

Five minutes later Poland striker Robert Lewandowski struck a superb dipping volley that flew just over the bar as his side ramped up the pressure, while Eugen Polanski had a goal disallowed in the 18th minute.

But Arshavin was growing in influence and the 31-year-old soon broke away down the left flank and sent in an inviting cross for Aleksandr Kerzhakov, but the striker headed wide. Moments later the pair combined again, but this time the Arsenal man could not get on the end of the forward's cross.

Russia finally broke the deadlock in the 37th minute and once again Arshavin was involved. He sent in a delicious curling free kick from 25 yards out and the ball flew off Alan Dzagoev's shoulder and into the far corner for his third goal of the tournament.

The second half was an even more open affair, with Russia a threat and Poland refusing to lie down and accept their fate. Indeed, within 12 minutes of the restart the co-hosts were deservedly level as captain Jakub Blaszczykowski cut in from the left and struck an unstoppable strike into the top corner.

It was a breathless affair with both sides committed to attack, and Dzagoev again went close for Russia while Poland's Polanski tested Malafeev with a firm effort.

But there were to be no more goals as both sides shared the spoils on an entertaining night in Warsaw.
