To celebrate the completion of a successful pilot of Arsenal's Cookery and Healthy Living Double Club module, over 30 students from Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Girls School, Mount Carmel Girls School and Central Foundation Boys School were invited to Arsenal Football Club's training ground in London Colney by Arsenal Training Ground's head chef Rob Fagg.
During the event, Rob, alongside West Ham United Chef Tim De'Ath, prepared a wide variety of healthy dishes using simple ingredients with the help of the enthusiastic students. In just one hour, Rob, Tim and the students prepared a carrot and coriander soup, chicken stir-fry and grilled salmon with a fresh home-made salad. To finish, Rob also made a delicious mix of yogurt and fruit for dessert with home-made bread-and-butter pudding and fruit salad.
During the session participants were also invited to ask questions regarding their favourite player's meals and diets and learn more about food hygiene and how to lead a healthy lifestyle.
The Arsenal Double Club is an initiative which harnesses the power and popularity of football and fuses it with a wide variety of school subjects including modern languages, numeracy and literacy, geography and history to name a few, to provide innovative teaching resources. The 45-minute classes are followed by a 45-minute football coaching session with an Arsenal in the Community coach - mirroring the two halves of the beautiful game.
Arsenal's Double Club Co-ordinator Scott Cohen said: "Healthy eating is a very important issue at the moment and this module is a very good way of engaging youngsters in healthy eating and living.
"Learning how their heroes eat and train can only help get these vital healthy living messages through to children. In the cookery Double Club, the pupils will follow their practical cooking sessions with some fitness work. Helping them to eat well and play well!"
The new module has been developed in partnership with Cambridge Education @ Islington's Cookery and Healthy Eating Consultant Angela Moodie who said: "This was an exciting hands-on cookery session which gave all pupils an insight into what Arsenal Training Ground's head chef serves up at lunchtime - and it is indeed tasty and healthy!
"All pupils and teachers thoroughly enjoyed the session and are eager to know when Rob is planning to do the next one!"
