Thomas Vermaelen is 84th debut goalscorer

On Saturday Thomas Vermaelen became the 84th Gunner to score on his Arsenal debut.

The summer-signing took just 37 minutes to get off the mark, thundering home a header from Robin van Persie's delivery to put the Gunners 2-0 up at Goodison Park.

Of course, last season Samir Nasri also marked the opening day with a debut goal, and Vermaelen becomes the fourth player in the Arsène Wenger era to achieve the feat alongside the Frenchman, Emmanuel Adebayor and Freddie Ljungberg,

The list below are scorers when a league match was their major competition debut. Debut scorers in other competitions include Raphael Meade (Europe), Ian Wright and Danny Karbassiyoon (League Cup) and Gilberto (Charity Shield).

Although it wasn't his first game for the Club, Ian Wright scored a hat-trick on his first league start for Arsenal. His three debut goals helped Arsenal beat Southampton 4-0 at The Dell on September 28, 1991.
