Matthew Connolly
Connolly delighted with first senior goal
By Adam Clark
Defender Matthew Connolly is hoping to feature on the scoresheet more often after netting his first senior goal for Bournemouth.
The 19-year-old centre back, who joined the south coast club on loan at the end of November, headed the opener in Tuesday's 2-0 win over League One leaders Nottingham Forest.
Now the Arsenal Reserves captain is determined to ensure it's not a one-off contribution.
"I try to go forward and score as much as I can," said Connolly. "Hopefully now I'll get a few more. I'd love to be doing that because it helps the team and it helps results.
"It's a great feeling to score, especially in such a big game. Forest are top of the league, hadn't lost away and there was a big crowd too. The win was really important, but I'm happy I scored and happy we kept a clean sheet."
The Arsenal youngster helped Bournemouth to two draws before Tuesday's win and although the Cherries currently lie 20th in League One, they are moving in the right direction. They have conceded just once since Connolly's arrival - and that was from the penalty spot.
"I just want to keep the opposition from scoring. When I play games that's what I look to do, that's my job. Coming here and keeping clean sheets has been fantastic for my confidence. I've learnt a lot already and I want to continue doing so.
"My Carling Cup experience with Arsenal [against West Bromwich Albion] has helped me massively in terms of playing in front of big crowds and dealing with that. And obviously it's much more physical too and the game I played for Arsenal was great for me to learn. When I came here I was ready for it."
