Sir Bobby Robson... a true football legend
Club pays tribute to Sir Bobby Robson
Everyone at Arsenal has been deeply saddened by the news that the former England manager Sir Bobby Robson has died at the age of 76 after a long battle with cancer.
One of the greatest names in football, Sir Bobby was a key player for Fulham and West Brom during the 1950s and 1960s and won 20 caps for England.
But he will be best remembered for his managerial career.
Sir Bobby enjoyed significant success with Ipswich Town, orchestrating an FA Cup victory over Arsenal in 1978, and then lifting the Uefa Cup in 1981.
Sir Bobby was appointed as England manager in 1982. He led his country to the last eight of the 1986 World Cup before taking England to within a whisker of the 1990 Final when they were beaten by Germany in a penalty shoot-out.
His career then took him to Europe where he managed PSV Eindhoven, Sporting Lisbon, Porto and Barcelona. He returned to Newcastle in 1999 and was knighted in 2002 before finishing his career at St. James’ Park.
Sir Bobby was a true football legend and a gentleman. The thoughts of everyone at Arsenal Football Club are with his family and friends at this difficult time.
