Sol Campbell in action for England

Campbell relaxed about World Cup prospects

By Chris Harris

Sol Campbell is relaxed about his World Cup prospects - because he knows his England destiny is out of his hands.

Fabio Capello is due to announce a provisional squad of 30 for this summer’s tournament and the Arsenal defender has been tipped for a shock return to the international scene after a stirring end to the season.

Arsène Wenger’s January swoop for Campbell raised plenty of eyebrows but the 35-year-old has proved his doubters wrong with a string of powerful displays and recently scooped the Club’s Player of the Month award for April.

The veteran of three previous World Cups will soon find out if he has done enough to play in a fourth. But although Campbell would love to be involved in South Africa, he is not getting carried away.

“I’d love to go but I’m not really thinking about it too much because it’s out of my hands. It is totally out of my hands,” he told Arsenal.com.

“Whether people think I can do a job and fill in the gaps if there are any injuries, it’s up to them.

“I’ve had a great season and people have seen me play. I’ve been playing regularly and that has definitely helped me. I’ve played more games than I was expected to play and it has helped me put my name back to where it is.

“If a call-up comes I will be honoured and I will go for it. But I am not going to count my chickens, I’m just going to work hard and go from there.

“If nothing happens I can still say to myself that I have given my all for the past five months at Arsenal.”
