‘Delighted’ Steve Bould is keen to harness the undoubted talent of Emmanuel Frimpong - but not too much.

The Ghana-born midfielder, who is nine days younger than teenage sensation Jack Wilshere, turned in a superb shift in the Under-18s’ engine room during their victory over Wolves in the FA Youth Cup on Tuesday night. After the game, Bould rated Frimpong’s performance as his best yet.

The 17-year-old’s tireless shift in the middle of the park was peppered with some ferocious long-range efforts. And, although he does not encourage it, Bould conceded that he won’t have many complaints if Frimpong continues to test the goalkeeper.

“He keeps having a slash at goal and we tell him not to but he keeps hitting the target,” Bould said after the victory. “He can get a bit carried away sometimes because he’s a young boy who’s learning. He’s growing up and we’re delighted with his development.

“I thought he was excellent in terms of his defensive side which is something we’ve worried about a little bit. But, for me, that was his best game and we’re delighted.”
