Mikel Arteta was delighted to pull on an Arsenal shirt for the first time at the weekend and, more importantly, help his new side to three points against Swansea.
The 29-year-old joined the Club on transfer deadline day and went straight into Arsène Wenger’s starting XI for the visit of the Premier League new boys.
Arteta slotted seamlessly into Arsenal’s midfield, pulling the strings alongside Aaron Ramsey and Emmanuel Frimpong on his first appearance at Emirates Stadium since moving from Everton.
“I’ve been waiting all week to get the opportunity to play in this stadium for this Club and I really enjoyed it,” he told Arsenal Player.
“The fans have been really good since the day I signed for Arsenal, they have really welcomed me and I really appreciate it.
“We got the three points and played some good football. We had a spell for the first 15 minutes where we could have scored two or three and it could have been a different game.
“But, to their credit, Swansea played good football and it was difficult. We are really happy with the three points.”
Upon completing his move, the Spanish midfielder admitted the opportunity to play in Europe’s elite club competition was a key factor behind his decision to leave Goodison Park.
Arsenal begin their Champions League campaign with a trip to German champions Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday and Arteta feels building momentum is vital after the Swansea win.
“You need to get that going because that brings confidence to the whole Club,” he said. “It’s going to be a really hard game but we need to win. If we start winning, things become much easier.
“You want to play against the top teams, the top players and it is a top competition. Let’s go out there and try and win.”
