Sporting Lisbon 3-0 Porto
Sunday, February 28
Porto's title hopes faded further at the weekend after a crushing defeat in a bad-tempered affair at Sporting Lisbon ended their run of 14 games without defeat. The hosts were on a high after knocking Everton out of the Uefa Cup in midweek and they repeated that scoreline against Porto. Djalo fired Sporting ahead after just six minutes and Izmailov doubled the advantage on the stroke of half-time. Any hopes of a Porto comeback were all but extinguished when Veloso struck two minutes after the restart and the contest ended with a flurry of bookings as five in the last 17 minutes took the match tally to nine. Arsenal's next Champions League opponents find themselves nine points adrift of leaders Benfica with just nine games remaining in the Portuguese Liga. Porto host Olhanense next Saturday before travelling to Emirates Stadium to defend their 2-1 lead against the Gunners.
