Bacary Sagna... talking exclusively to Arsenal TV Online

Sagna - The reason we are conceding more

By Chris Harris

Bacary Sagna admits that Arsenal's defensive record is a consequence of the team's free-flowing, attacking style.

Arsène Wenger's side have rattled in 36 goals in just 11 Premier League fixtures but have also conceded an average of more than one goal per game. That's a higher rate than last season but Sagna believes there is a valid explanation.

"We are conceding more goals because the games are more open now," he told Arsenal TV Online before the international break.

"We are scoring lots of goals, it is one of our best starts to the season, but as well we are conceding more goals. As a defender I am not happy with that because I want us to keep a clean sheet but the most important thing is to score more goals than the other team and win the game."

Although the statistics suggest otherwise, Sagna believes that Arsenal are a stronger defensive unit this season because they are working harder on winning the ball back.

"I think we all want to get the ball back very quickly," said the right-back.

"Everyone is defending quicker and the forwards are doing more. It helps us play as a team. We worked a lot on this in pre-season because we changed the formation and we have to keep working on it."

Subscribers can now watch the full interview with Bacary on Arsenal TV Online. He discussed:

  • what they have worked on in training
  • conceding more goals this season
  • Thomas Vermaelen's adaptation
