A week is a very long time in football. Last Friday, after the late draw with Tottenham, defeat at Stoke and an under-par performance against Fenerbahce, Arsène Wenger spent most of his pre-match press conference defending his team. Now, after victory against Manchester United and another sublime Carling Cup performance, matters turned back to football.

On Saturday the Frenchman sees his side come up against the team widely tipped as the most likely to break into the ‘big’ four – Marton O’Neil’s Aston Villa. On Friday afternoon Wenger gave his pre-match press conference where he discussed:

  • how ready his Carling Cup youngsters are for the Premier League
  • the level of English talent in the squad
  • scoring and conceding late goals
  • Aston Villa’s mantle as the ‘best of the rest’
  • Trevor Brooking’s comments about grass roots football
  • Didier Drogba’s coin-throwing incident
  • the Premier League being ‘more interesting this season’
  • the progress of Aaron Ramsey
