Kelly Smith bagged five as Arsenal Ladies recorded their biggest victory for two years with an 11-2 win at Liverpool.
Liverpool’s first home game of the season saw Smith score a four-minute hat-trick as well while Karen Carney, summer-signing Dannii Bird, and Jayne Ludlow each grabbed a brace.
- Ludlow Goal! Goal!
- Grant 70
- Carney Goal! Goal!
- Smith Goal! Goal! Goal! Goal! Goal!
- Bird 70 Goal! Goal!
- Cheryl Foster Goal! Goal!
Arsenal were in control from the off. Both Carney and Niamh Fahey struck the woodwork within the first 10 minutes before Smith made the pressure tell in the 12th minute. The England international wasted no time in doubling her tally with a well-executed lob from just inside the area. Two minutes later and her hat-trick was complete. This time on her left foot, Smith rifled home an effort that rose into the top right-hand corner.
A delightful team move provided Carney with her first of the game and Arsenal’s fourth on 26 minutes and Smith helped herself to her fourth just seven minutes later. The visitors were already out of sight.
Cheryl Foster provided something for Liverpool to shout about, coolly slotting home from 10 yards after some fantastic build-up from the hosts. Ludlow netted a magnificent overhead kick outside the penalty area on 42 minutes to restore the four-goal deficit before Foster recorded her second on the stroke of half-time.
It was more of the same in the second half as Ludlow further extended Arsenal’s lead. Bird replaced Grant and wasted no time in netting twice within 12 minutes either side of Carney’s second of the afternoon. As Liverpool appeared to tire, Smith piled on the misery with her fifth just three minutes from time.
For the record, a 14-0 win over Fulham on August 27, 2006 is the highest scoring win for the Gunners in the last three seasons.Copyright 2013 The Arsenal Football Club plc.
