Pires - The derby goal I'll never forget

Robert Pires was the star turn in a number of north London derbies, but there is one that he will never forget.

Playing only his second game against Tottenham Hotspur since joining Arsenal from Marseille, the World Cup winner cut inside and rifled an unstoppable strike into the far corner.

Pires would go on to score the winner in our FA Cup semi-final victory over Spurs the following week, but the 43-year-old will always remember his strike at Highbury because of its significance off the pitch.

“I remember this moment because when you play against Tottenham, it’s usually a very difficult, very tough game,” he told Arsenal Player.

“It was important for the team, for me, but a sad day for the Arsenal fans because of David Rocastle’s death. It was a special moment and I was very happy to score, but sad for the Rocastle family.

“For me, it was special because he played with the No 7 and I played with the No 7. It was a good transmission between David and me. I was very happy for the future.”
