We have been indebted to Nacho Monreal and Robert Huth for helping secure a late victory against Leicester City on Wednesday, but Petr Cech also deserves a lot of credit.

The Arsenal goalkeeper made a key save to deny Riyad Mahrez in the first half, and afterwards he spoke to the media about the game.

This is what he had to say:

on how big a night this could prove to be…
Well, you know, our remaining games are more or less like finals. So we needed to make sure we got all three points in a delayed fixture. After a big game at the weekend, having played 120 minutes, we had to rotate the squad. We needed to use everyone and I am pleased for everybody who came in and contributed to an important win.

on the team’s desire…
Sometimes you need to be patient, you need to make sure that you push on for the 90 minutes and today we obviously scored a late goal. But it was coming, we were getting closer and closer and they were defending well but in the end we found a deflection and I think that we probably felt that [we deserved] a little bit of luck with the deflection because of the way we pushed on.

on whether the team lifted their performance level in the second half…
I think both, they were happy with the first half obviously. They were in the game and they were waiting for their opportunities to counter. I have to say that we needed to step up a little bit second half because the score was only 0-0 and it was not enough for us. So second half we put fresh people on during the second half as well which helped, I thought that we found a way to win which is the most important.

on where this result leaves hopes of finishing in the top four…
Well, we have two games less than Liverpool, so obviously if we win both of them we can catch Liverpool and will be closer to the top four target. So this is what we need. We need to get the wins in a row. Now we can be pleased with this one, but we have not much time to dwell on it and we need to prepare for the north London derby and obviously this is a huge game for both teams.

on whether the team is now in good shape for Sunday…
Well, we have three wins on the bounce so obviously we try to carry the momentum to Sunday.
