‘Why that lob was my best Arsenal goal’

“Yeah, OK - I think I can put the ball over him.”

That was Robert Pires’ reaction when he bore down on Peter Schmeichel at Villa Park in 2002, having flicked the ball past the covering George Boating.

The winger scored 84 goals for us - but this was his favourite.

“I think it’s my best goal with Arsenal,” Pires told Arsenal Player. “Technically it was perfect, because I received a long ball rom Freddie, I put the ball over Boating, the defender, and when I was in front of Schmeichel, I thought ‘yeah, OK - I think I can put the ball over him’.

“But he was on the line… I tried and I scored. For me, the action at the beginning, and the finishing - it was perfect.”
