'If you're told to play, you play'

Alex Iwobi

Alex Iwobi was handed the responsibility of the No 10 role against Liverpool on Saturday with Mesut Ozil ruled out through illness.

Like the rest of the team, the Nigeria international came alive after the break but was left to regret a below-par first-half performance.

Here’s what Alex said after the game:

on the end…
We gave ourselves a bit too much to do. It was just unfortunate in the end because we kept on pushing and pushing, and that’s how they scored their third goal in the end.

on important games to come…
We’ve just got to continue going until the end of the season.

on how it feels…
I didn’t think we started the game as well as we could have done.

on whether he was surprised Alexis started on the bench…
There’s been a lot of surprises this season, so I just take it game by game. If you get told to play, then you have to play.

on whether the boss explained his decision…
He didn’t give us any reason behind it, it’s just what he thought the best team for the day would be. Alexis did come on in the second half and he played as well as he could, so it was important for us to do our best.

on not having Mesut Ozil…
Mesut’s a class player and we missed his creativity today, but it’s a team game and at the end of the day, we all have to do our job.

on Bayern Munich…
We already experienced just how great they are in the first leg, so we just have to push on and do our best to get ourselves through to the next round.
