‘It was a great assist by Mesut’

16/17: Basel v Arsenal - Alex Iwobi

Mesut assists again.

Our No 11 in the No 10 role cooked up another batch of key chances as we cruised to a 4-1 victory at Basel - and the top of Group A.

This time Alex Iwobi was the main beneficiary, Mesut setting him up for a tap-in to end the Nigerian’s wait for a goal this season.

“It’s been a good night,” said Iwobi. “I wouldn’t say my goal was a cracker but it was a great assist by Mesut.

“It’s felt like a long time coming and it’s always a great feeling to score a goal, but I’m just pleased with the team¹s performance and that we were able to finish top of the group.

“Having a second leg at home is a big advantage [in the knockout stage] and it gives you the belief that you can do it. However, the Champions League is full of top teams.”

Our fans had eyes and ears on developments in Paris, where Ludogorets held PSG to a 2-2 draw to hand us top spot. But how did the players follow the other game?

“We saw the scores at half-time when we were walking into the dressing room,” revealed Iwobi.

“It gave us that extra belief so we just had to maintain our positive approach. We dropped off a bit which is why we conceded, but we still completed the job.”
