Everyone at Arsenal was saddened to hear of the recent death of David Herd, aged 82.

David joined us from Stockport County in August 1954 and made his breakthrough in 1956/57 - scoring 18 goals in 28 games.

A Scotland international, he was our leading goalscorer for four successive seasons and starred as we finished third in 1958/59.

David scored 97 times in 166 First Division games prior to joining Manchester United in July 1961, where he would score twice in their 1963 FA Cup final triumph as well as winning two league titles.

David would later join Stoke City and then Waterford United, before retiring. He then had a spell as manager of Lincoln City between 1971 and 1972.
