Club marks Refugee Week

Freedom from Torture

Arsenal in the Community hosted a tournament at Market Road in Islington on Monday to mark Refugee Week.

Two teams from the Gunners’ joint programme with Freedom from Torture took part, alongside Plymouth Hope FC – a team of refugees and asylum seekers supported by the British Red Cross Welcome Project.

Plymouth Hope ran out tournament winners with 4-1 and 3-1 victories. The team celebrated their win with a tour of Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal in the Community coach Anthony Prodromou said: “Joining up with Plymouth Hope for a game of football was a great way to mark Refugee Week. Our programme with Freedom from Torture over the past few years has shown that football can be a brilliant way of bringing people together, and that was the case again on Monday.”

Arsenal and Freedom from Torture’s football therapy programme brings together survivors of torture who have sought asylum in the UK for football training and English language workshops. It uses football as a tool to improve participants’ physical and mental wellbeing.
