‘Experienced players really helped us’

By Lloyd Webb

Julio Pleguezuelo says playing alongside the likes of Santi Cazorla and Francis Coquelin was an invaluable experience for Arsenal Under-21s.

Steve Gatting’s side secured promotion to Division One with a 3-1 play-off final victory against Aston Villa at Emirates Stadium on Tuesday.

"The lads kept going and we got the result at the end so we are very, very happy"

Chris Willock’s strike and Stephy Mavididi’s brace sealed the win, but Pleguezuelo says the first-team stars in the side played an integral role in the result.

“Their technical level is unreal,” he Spaniard told Arsenal Player. “They really helped us.

"Joel Campbell was offensively good. You can see the difference between first-team players and under-21s so it is a good reason to keep going and try to be as good as them.

“It was a tough game. Aston Villa are a really good side, and they got in front first. The lads kept going and we got the result at the end so we are very, very happy.

“We said in the dressing room that we knew we were going to score goals so we just had to defend as well as we can and let the guys do the rest up front.”
