Arteta - I could see Danny’s goal coming

Welbeck and team celebrate his goal

Mikel Arteta was not surprised at Danny Welbeck’s winner against Leicester City because he “could see that goal coming”.

The England international marked his return after almost 10 months out by heading home a dramatic stoppage-time winner against the Foxes, moving Arsenal to within two points of the Premier League leaders.

Arteta believes Welbeck’s winner was just reward for the high level to which he has performed in training recently.

"The atmosphere at Emirates last weekend was the best I have known for a long time. It was like the wind was blowing our way because the fans were all behind us"

“I could see that goal coming,” the captain told the matchday programme. “Danny's been doing all the right things lately. It's been a frustrating time for him of course, but he's been working hard and training really well.

“Sometimes for strikers it takes a while for them to get their sharpness back - but with Danny he's looked really good right from the off. The manager gave him the opportunity in a big game like that, when there was all to play for, and he showed how important he is.”

Arteta has also praised the Arsenal fans for creating an “unbelievable” atmosphere against Leicester.

“The atmosphere at Emirates last weekend was the best I have known for a long time,” he added. “It was like the wind was blowing our way because the fans were all behind us.

“Even down on the bench, you could feel it. The atmosphere the fans created was unbelievable and it really helped the team to believe and keep pushing until the last second.”
