Club of the month: Flitwick Eagles

Arsenal Ladies club of the month

Flitwick Eagles is a Community Charter Standard Football Club in the heart of Bedfordshire, founded in 1986 with currently 38 boys and girls teams playing youth football.

In September 2014 they moved into a brand new football centre that has nine pitches, 3G training facilities, cafeteria/restaurant and changing/shower facilities. They currently have five girls teams, a ladies team and an Academy for girls aged between five and eight.

In November 2014 Flitwick set out a five year plan to establish Flitwick Eagles as one of the major clubs for girls football in the region. Over the last twelve months they have seen the number of girls playing football at the club increase from 44 registered players to 102 registered players. Our plan was based on four key objectives:

• Establish an Academy for girls aged between five and eight.
• Develop a football philosophy that encouraged girls to develop their skills and technique above all else.
• Develop a coaching pathway for girls in the older age groups.
• Develop closer links with the FA, Schools and other professional football bodies

Working closely with Bedfordshire FA Flitwick have set up a successful academy for younger girls who would like to start playing football in a female only environment. Bedfordshire FA ran a number of coaching taster sessions in lower schools and all girls that attended were invited to join our academy.

The academy now has 25 girls attending on a weekly basis. They have strongly promoted coaching opportunities for girls at the older age groups and a number have completed their level 1 FA Coaching badge. These girls are now heavily involved in coaching the younger teams.

All coaches work on agreed coaching plans to enable players to be comfortable in possession of the football and to play in all positions to develop greater awareness and technique. Next season the Eagles expect that the number of girls teams will increase from six teams to eleven teams.

They believe that the club associate programme with Arsenal will significantly help our girls division achieve our five year goals. For further information or to join Flitwick Eagles please contact Girls Development Officer, Kevin Farr:
