Theo Walcott claims Arsenal's comfortable victory over Manchester United is a statement of intent to the rest of the league.

The Gunners have risen to second place in the table, two points behind Manchester City, after an electric first-half performance laid the foundations for a 3-0 win over Louis van Gaal's men.

"This result especially will send out a message to the Premier League that we are ready to actually have a go this season," Walcott said at the final whistle. "That desire was there, but we need to show it in every single game now, it can’t just be one offs. You could sense by the way we started today, it was going to be a good day."

"Some of the football we played in the first half was just unbelievable to be involved in"

Walcott played his part in the flying start, setting up the second goal for Mesut Ozil after seven minutes, then providing the final pass for Alexis Sanchez to make it 3-0 12 minutes later. But the forward was also pleased with the team's discipline after the break.

"Some of the football we played in the first half was just unbelievable to be involved in," he added. "Maybe we eased off a bit in the second half but to be honest we are always happy with a clean sheet, that is crucial for us as well.

"When we have won games before, we have tended to give away sloppy goals, so it was crucial for the whole team to keep a clean sheet today."
