Lianne Sanderson helped England Women to a 3-1 victory against Finland in their Cyprus Cup opener.

The Arsenal striker gave her country the lead when she headed past Minna Meriluoto in the first half and Eniola Aluka doubled England’s advantage after 66 minutes.

Jess Clarke added a third with seven minutes remaining before Gemma Bonner was sent off for conceding a penalty against Annika Kukkonen, which Finland captain Maija Saari dispatched.

Alex Scott was a 62nd-minute substitute and nearly made an impact, smashing one shot over from a tight angle. Jordan Nobbs and Siobhan Chamberlain were unused substitutes.

Emma Mitchell and Caroline Weir started Scotland’s 2-0 defeat against Canada in the Cyprus Cup.

Jessie Flemming finished a third-minute counter-attack to put Canada ahead before captain Christine Sinclair secured the win in the second half.

Vero Boquete tapped in from close range to give Spain the lead before Sonia Bermudez added a second after the break.

Hannah Wilkinson then rounded Dolores Gallardo to pull one back before her close-range strike was followed up by Amber Hearn to level for New Zealand.

Elsewhere, Emma Byrne played the full 90 minutes of Ireland’s 1-1 draw against Hungary in the Croatia Istria Cup.

Fanni Vago gave Hungary the lead from the penalty spot after an alleged handball but Ruesha Littlejohn equalised from the edge of the box in the 72nd minute to secure a point.
