Boss - How Martinez impressed in Belgium

Emiliano Martinez

Arsene Wenger believes Emiliano Martinez's performance in Belgium a fortnight ago shows he has the "mental dimension" to play for Arsenal.

The 22-year-old delivered a steady performance when making his Champions League debut against Anderlecht at Constant Vanden Stock stadium, making two vital saves in the second half.

Wojciech Szczesny is expected to return to the team on Tuesday following a suspension, but the manager believes Martinez has the quality required at the top level.

"He has shown that he can deal with that kind of pressure. He's calm, has presence and has the confidence"

"[Emi] Martinez impressed me in the away game at Anderlecht," Wenger told the official matchday programme.

"I think he gained confidence and respect from everybody, because he has shown that he has the quality to play for us. Not only because of his technical quality, but his presence as well was great.

"He has shown that he can deal with that kind of pressure. He's calm, has presence and has the confidence, which is very reassuring.

"We know that he can stop the balls, but that mental dimension you only see when they play."
