Club gives £25,000 to mentoring charity

Tomas Rosicky

Arsenal Football Club is donating £25,000 to Friendship Works, a local charity that improves the childhood and ultimately life chances of children living in Islington and Camden through mentoring.

The donation comes from Arsenal’s participation in The FA Community Shield on Sunday against Manchester City at Wembley.

Through the donation, Friendship Works will continue supporting and improving the life chances of children aged five to 16 on the club and charity’s shared doorstep.

Islington has the second highest rate of child poverty in London, and the fifth highest in England. Friendship Works has a waiting list of 76 local children and young people who need a mentor in the Borough. With Arsenal’s support Friendship Works also wants to recruit more adult volunteers so the children can enjoy simple activities other young people may take for granted.

The charity is looking for people from all walks of life to mentor local young people at risk, and especially males who enjoy sport who can be positive role models for the children.

By having a mentor, children supported by the organisation have a chance at a brighter childhood and better opportunities.

“The best thing about hanging out with my mentor is that I get to do more things that I didn’t do before, like going to a football match for the first time. It is nice to have my own time and space to do my own things and be myself with my mentor”

“The mentor helps you stay out of trouble… they inspire you to do new things and not follow other people, but follow your dreams.”
