Thomas Vermaelen was forced to withdraw in the first half as Belgium scored a late winner to beat Russia and qualify for the last 16 of the World Cup.

The Arsenal captain, who started at left back, limped off after 31 minutes and was replaced by Jan Vertonghen.

In a game of very few chances, Russia's Alexander Kokorin headed over just before half-time and Kevin Mirallas struck a post with a free-kick with seven minutes remaining for Belgium.

But two minutes before the end, Eden Hazard's cross was converted by substitute Divock Origi to ensure Marc Wilmots' side progress to the knockout phase.
