Nacho Monreal says it would be “amazing” if Spain were able to defend their World Cup title.

The Arsenal left back was not included in the holders’ final 23-man squad for the tournament, which started last week.

Vicente del Bosque’s side take on Chile in Rio de Janeiro on Wednesday, and Monreal still believes they can go on to lift the trophy once again.

“It is the biggest tournament, with the best teams and the best players in the world there,” he said.

“It is a month-long tournament, and it is something wonderful. I cannot say what it’s like because I have never been to one, but to be able to defend your title and win it again would be amazing.

“[When I think of] all the disappointments Spain suffered previously, there was always a lot of expectation that ‘this is our year’, but we never made it past the quarter-finals.

“Those were the biggest disappointments, but now we have overcome them far beyond our expectations.”
