At both club and international level, Lukasz Fabianski has remained in competition with Wojciech Szczesny for the goalkeeper’s berth. And while he has not been able to dislodge his compatriot from the No 1 spot, Szczesny is in no doubt that the 27-year-old has the talent to succeed at the highest level.

“I believe Lukasz is the best No 2 in the country,” Szczesny said. “Every time he goes in goal the team is confident he will do a good job, and to have someone like that behind you gives you a lot of motivation to work hard at the training ground.
I know I have to be at my very best in every game because he is waiting to take my spot. It helps keep you sharp and to be at your very best.”

Lukasz was a regular in Arsenal’s Carling Cup campaign, featuring in the games against Shrewsbury, Bolton and Manchester City. The Pole also played in the Gunners’ Champions League defeat at Olympiacos, but sustained a knee injury that ruled him out of action for an extended period.

The agile shotstopper returned to action in time to appear in the FA Cup ties against Aston Villa and Sunderland, but Szczesny’s form in the Premier League meant he found first-team opportunities limited. But with Fabianski ready to take his chance, the Gunners can look to the future with optimism.

“I am fighting hard, really hard. It has been a difficult time for me because I was No 1 last year and I lost it due to my injury. Now I am fit again but Wojciech is doing well.  Of course I am not happy with my position because I want to be No 1 but I have to accept it and fight for it. I am fighting really hard to get where I was before."
