2009/10 Player Review: Mikael Silvestre

No one in the Arsenal squad can match Mikael for winners medals so it's no surprise that the French centre back has emerged as something of a 'father figure' to the latest batch of Arsenal youngsters.

Mikael captained the young Gunners in the Carling Cup last season, led a youthful Champions League side at Olympiacos and occasionally stepped down into the Reserves where he had an equally galvanising effect.

First-team opportunities were at a premium as Thomas Vermaelen and William Gallas forged a fine understanding but the 32-year-old did get a run in the side when injuries hit late in the season.

He even got on the scoresheet at Wigan - before it all went wrong in the last 10 minutes.

SOUNDBITE
"People respect him highly in the dressing room. He's a quiet leader. He's a positive guy and helps the young players." - Arsène Wenger

FINEST MOMENT
The expression on Mikael's face after he scored at Wigan showed how much that meant to him. But he was at his calm, assured best in the Carling Cup. Liverpool brought a strong squad to the Emirates for a Fourth-Round tie in October but the Arsenal veteran snuffed them out time and time again.

Bendtner scores the winner, but Silvestre was the defensive rock - Arsenal 2-1 Liverpool
