If Arsenal are to win the Champions League this season they will need their fair share of luck along the way, according to Arsène Wenger.

The Frenchman feels that whoever is still standing in Europe’s elite club competition come May will have had decisions go in their favour and seen their key players avoid injury at the business end of the season.

Indeed, Wenger is convinced that last year’s finalists – Inter Milan and Bayern Munich – would have struggled in different circumstances.

“You need decisions to go your way,” said the manager.

“With normal refereeing none of them would go to the Final last year. Not Bayern, not Inter.

“For example Bayern last year knocked Fiorentina out and they scored a goal that was five yards offside and away from home Robben scores that amazing goal.”

The luck that Wenger is talking of extends to the fitness of his players.

“You need important players not to get injured. You need important players to be available in April.”
