Arsène Wenger expects Jack Wilshere to return to the England senior squad sooner rather than later.

The 18-year-old made his debut for Fabio Capello’s side as a substitute in a friendly against Hungary in August but has been called up to the Under-21 squad for next week’s European Championship play-off against Romania. However there is talk that Wilshere may miss the second leg of that tie to join up with the senior squad for their Euro 2012 qualifier against Montenegro on October 12.

Wenger refused to be drawn on whether his player should still be considered for Under-21 action but expects him to establish himself in the main squad before long.

“It is not down to me [which England team he is picked for] but I select him for my first team and that means he is good enough because all my players are internationals,” said Wenger.

“But I am convinced he will be called up for the senior national team, if it’s not this time it will be next. It is only a question of time.

“He’s playing very well.”
