on the performance…
It was a good response [following the 2-0 defeat to Sunderland]. In the first half we got caught cold a bit, they scored a good goal and we wobbled, but we showed good discipline and competed. In the second half we got on top and were a bit unlucky not to have sneaked a win.

on going behind after three minutes…
It’s always disappointing to concede an early goal, but credit to Aston Villa. It was a good cross and the centre forward has done exceedingly well to get across the centre half. It was a good goal, there’s not much you can do about it. It makes life a little bit harder, but we showed we have spirit, we work for each other and there were some little bits of quality under pressure as well.

on the second-half response…

We rallied really well and as the game went on I thought that if we got a goal, we might have been able to go on and win the game. I said to them at half-time that they had shown good spirit after the setback and let’s keep it going and we might get on top. It was edging that way and we maybe ran out of time. But possibly 1-1 was a fair result.

on Jon Toral’s debut for the Reserves…
It’s great to see a young lad of 17 come into the team. He did well today, although he maybe found it a bit fast at first. He kept at it and did well. That’s what our Reserves and development programme is all about.

on an encouraging display overall…
I said to them that football is about winning. We want to develop them, but being a winner is a big part of being a top-level player. It’s no good looking nice, you have to win games. We know the way the Club wants to play, but a big part of it is wanting to be a winner. Hopefully now we have something to move on with.
