Arsène Wenger hopes Arsenal can build on a positive statistic when they resume their FA Cup challenge this weekend.

The Gunners' win percentage for matches that follow Champions League away games since 1998/99 is higher than their overall win rate over the same period.

That is something of a surprise when you factor in the travelling involved in European competition and the intensity of domestic matches just a few days later.

Wenger cannot put his finger on why Arsenal rise to the post-Champions League occasion but he takes heart from it.

"It is difficult to explain," he told Arsenal Player. "There is not a significant difference but I believe that maybe you are on your toes, you know you have another difficult game, you don't relax and you prepare again mentally.

"You recharge your batteries for the next battle because you know you have another battle in front of you and you don't release the pressure."
