on the result...
It was a disappointing performance. In the first half we made some defensive mistakes and got punished; the second half was a bit better but their keeper could have played all day without having a shot [to deal with]. In the second half we had quite a lot of possession without really creating much and it is a lesson learned.

These lads are fighting for their careers and they’re hoping to get a first-team spot but they’ve let themselves down on this occasion. But that’s football - they’ve had a good period before, so hopefully this is just a blip. We’ll get back to work and prepare for the next game.

on Gavin Hoyte returning to action after injury…
Gavin had his cruciate [damage] and then his hamstring, so it was good for him to come through a full game.

on playing members of the first-team squad…
Obviously [it was] good to have Alex [Oxlade-Chamberlain], Ryo and Ju-Young Park back, so it’s all very pleasing on that aspect. The positive aspect of the game was that Alex, Ryo and Park got through it, nothing else.

on Sunderland’s display…
They’re a good club, with their young players. Every game is a hard game, and Sunderland played very well.

on facing Aston Villa next week…
You want to see a response, collectively and individually, because it is about producing players [for the first team]. They have to improve individually.”
