Arsène Wenger has no qualms about fielding players who are out of contract in the summer – because they are all focused on the job in hand.

Sol Campbell, Mikael Silvestre and the injured William Gallas are all approaching the end of their current deals but negotiations over their futures have been put on hold while Arsenal embark on a run of vital games.

In the past Wenger may have been reluctant to select players whose futures are up in the air but that definitely won’t be the case at Birmingham on Saturday. The Frenchman explained why at his pre-match press conference.

“They [the players in contract talks] are all focused,” he said.

“They are at an age where they know they have to deal with that, so that is not the same. When you have a player of 33, 34 he is in a normal situation. When he is a player of 23, 24 he is in an abnormal situation.

“I stopped talks with Gallas because it is important that we focus on the games we have. We play Birmingham, Barcelona, then Wolves, Barca then Tottenham. It is a crucial stage for us."
