Ahead of Saturday’s reunion with Robert Pires, Arsène Wenger insists the cultured French midfielder would still be an asset to any Premier League side.

Wenger knows better than most the quality possessed by Pires after his illustrious six-year spell with the Club and despite his aging years believes the 37-year-old can be a real threat, if employed in the correct way at the right time.

Seven days ago Pires joined this weekend’s opponents Aston Villa on a six-month deal after spending a few weeks training with the Arsenal first team to maintain his fitness. After taking a close look at him the Arsenal manager feels Pires still has plenty to offer at the highest level.

“He is the type of player who can help any team in the Premier League,” said Wenger. “Just at that age it is important you use him well at the right moment.

“No [I am not surprised at his move] because I saw what he has been doing in training. I am not surprised that Gerard Houllier thought about him.”
